A person may have an anxiety disorder in which both physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety may be present. Anxiety disorders may interfere with personal and professional life and may cause problems in interactions with others.

There are many different types of anxiety disorders such as social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder. The cause of anxiety disorders is unknown, although children whose parents have suffered from some form of depression or anxiety disorder may be more likely to experience anxiety.

Both physical and mental symptoms of anxiety may be present in individuals experiencing anxiety or suffering from an anxiety disorder. Physical symptoms may include shaking, breathlessness, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or sweating, cold and clammy hands, feeling agitated and restlessness. Muscle aches, tiredness and sleeping problems may also occur.

Emotional symptoms of anxiety may include irritability, worry, feeling destined for bad things and trouble concentrating or focusing. Anxiety disorders may be accompanied by other problems such as depression, substance abuse or heart and lung disease.

Treating anxiety may be done at home. Recognizing what causes stress and anxiety and developing a plan to deal with it may help patients find relief. Also, deciding to let go of the past may help those anxious about past events.

Leading a healthy lifestyle may be effective as well. Exercising, sleeping well, eating right and avoiding alcohol, caffeine and nicotine are part of a healthy lifestyle that may help reduce anxiety levels. Relaxation, meditation, massage, and aromatherapy are also options for treating anxiety.

Keeping the mind active, but not too active, may be helpful as well. Talking about stress and anxiety with others may help relieve anxiety levels, as being social and sorting through problems aloud may give individuals a more relaxed feeling. Doctors may prescribe medication to help with anxiety disorders and general anxiety if problems become too severe.
