Osteoarthritis may occur when the cartilage in a joint that allows two bones to move comfortably wears away. Osteoarthritis may occur in any joint, but is commonly found in the hands, knees, hips and joints in the spine.
Rheumatoid arthritis may occur as the body's immune system attacks itself and the lining in the joints swell. This may damage the cartilage and bone.
Gout is another form of arthritis and may occur in the big toe, knee and wrist. Gout may occur if the body is unable to dispose of uric acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. Uric acid may crystallize in the joint, causing swelling and pain in the joint.
Symptoms of arthritis may vary among the different types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis may not cause any symptoms besides the pain from the bones rubbing against one another. Other forms of arthritis may cause fever, rash, fatigue and joint inflammation including swelling, redness, stiffness, tenderness and warmth in the joint.
Treatment for arthritis may vary depending on the type of arthritis. A physician may prescribe medication to assist with the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.
In severe cases, injections may be administered to help the pain and stiffness of arthritic joints. Surgery may be necessary to repair any joint damage sustained as a result of arthritis.
Physicians may recommend a combination of medications to help with pain and inflammation, rest so that the tissue can heal, and exercise and physical therapy to help rebuild the strength of a joint. The exact treatment regiment prescribed by a doctor may vary depending on severity of the condition and the type of arthritis.
