Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder in which a person binge eats and afterward may purge, exercise excessively or take laxatives to get rid of the food. People with bulimia may feel unsatisfied with their body, but may feel comforted by the actual process of eating and enjoying food.

They may binge eat for comfort and may feel ashamed and guilty afterward. The cause of bulimia nervosa may be complex. It may be caused by a family history of obesity or eating disorders, the personality type of the person or it may be caused by certain social factors. It may be a combination of these as well.
Individuals with bulimia nervosa may have a negative body image or may have a job that requires a small physique such as a ballerina or gymnast. Symptoms of bulimia nervosa include binge eating and purging to avoid gaining weight. Bulimics may base their self-image on their weight.
While binge eating, the person may feel out of control and unable to stop, but garner feelings of shame and guilt shortly after binging. Bulimia nervosa may also cause tooth decay, gum disease and loss of enamel on the teeth as a result of acid in the mouth from vomiting. It may also lead to kidney problems, bone problems and heart problems and may even be deadly in some cases.
Individuals bulimia nervosa may talk about dieting, exercise a great deal, head to the restroom after meals, eat a lot but do not seem to gain weight or may keep their eating a secret. Bulimia nervosa may be treated through counseling, a psychologist or through medications. Counseling or meeting with a therapist may help the person raise their self-esteem and stop over eating and purging.
Medications such as antidepressants may be helpful if the person suffers from other conditions such as depression. Seeking treatment early may be helpful in preventing the problem from becoming more serious and may decrease the risk of certain health problems.
