The condition may be long-term, or chronic. Normally, skin cells flake off about every 4 weeks as new skin cells replace them. When the patient has psoriasis, new skin cells move to the surface in days rather than weeks, causing a buildup of thick patches referred to as plaques.

Psoriasis may be most common in adults, although it may affect people of all ages. The patches caused by psoriasis may be large or small and may commonly be found above the knees or on the elbows, scalp, hands, feet or lower back.

Psoriasis may be caused by an overreaction of the immune system as it may cause inflammation and flaking of the skin. The disease may also be genetic. Cold and dry climates, infections, stress and dry skin may trigger flare-ups of the disease. Certain medications may also cause an outbreak of psoriasis or may cause it to get worse.

People suffering from psoriasis may experience mild cases of the disease, with small rashes. In moderate cases, patients may experience raised skin with silvery, loose, scaly skin. With severe cases of the disease, the skin may become itchy or tender.

Patients may also experience swollen, tender or painful joints. This may be referred to as psoriasis arthritis, and may affect the fingernails and toenails as well. Nails may pit, change color or separate from the nail bed. Also, dead skin may accumulate underneath the nail.

In mild cases of psoriasis, treatment may begin with skin care. Keeping the skin moist using creams or lotions may be recommended. Certain shampoos, UV light and medications prescribed by a doctor may be used in combination.

Patients may treat psoriasis for a lifetime, as the condition may be persist for many years. Severe cases of the disease may be harder to treat. Patients may have to experiment with different treatments or a combination to determine what works best. Diet and lifestyle changes may also support healthy skin and immune system.
