It may also cause small, red bumps or pustules on the face as well. Rosacea may get progressively worse as time goes by. The condition may also flare-up at times and may go into remission, as the symptoms seem to go away.

Although the cause of rosacea may not be fully understood, researchers and health care professional believe that the cause may be a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Certain things may increase blood flow to the face, which may make the condition worse. Some of these possible causes may include hot or spicy foods or drinks, alcohol, extreme temperatures, exposure to sunlight, stress, anger, embarrassment, exercise, hot baths or showers, corticosteroids and certain medications.

Symptoms of the condition may include red areas on the face, red bumps or pustules (other than whiteheads or blackheads), red bulbous nose, visible blood vessels on the face, burning sensation in the eyes and a tendency to blush easily. Rosacea may begin as simply a tendency to blush or flush easily, but may progress into a more permanent redness in the face.

Small blood vessels may then become visible as the condition progresses further. In inflammatory rosacea, small, red bumps or pustules may develop. Doctors may physically examine the skin to diagnose the condition. They may inquire about the symptoms the patient experiences as well.

There may be no way of completely eliminating rosacea, but certain treatments may be effective in relieving some of the symptoms. Certain moisturizers, soaps or other topical skin treatments may be recommended. Medications and certain lifestyle changes may also be recommended by a health care professional. Laser surgery may be recommended in some cases as well.
