Possible causes of spider veins may include hereditary factors, standing for an extended period of time (often in a profession that requires prolonged periods of standing), obesity, hormonal influences during pregnancy, puberty or menopause, birth control pills, hormone replacements taken by postmenopausal women and a history of blood clots.

Other conditions may also cause spider veins in some individuals. These may include tumors and constipation, which may place increased pressure on the abdomen, thus causing spider veins. Externally worn garments such as girdles may also place increased pressure on the abdomen.

Spider veins may be found on people of all ages, but the condition may be more commonly found in women and older people. People with spider veins may experience aching and cramping in the legs. Other possible symptoms may include tiredness and restlessness.

Patients may also experience burning, throbbing, tingling or heaviness in the legs. Spider veins may also cause a blood clot with inflammation of the vein. Swelling and ulcers may also be symptoms of spider veins. Women may experience a worsening of symptoms during some parts of the menstrual cycle or during pregnancy.

Many treatments may exist for treating spider veins. Some people may wear compression stockings when the condition causes uncomfortable or painful symptoms. Losing weight, walking and taking care of the skin may also be effective in treating spider veins.

Sclerotherapy may be used in some patients. In this treatment, a health care professional may inject a solution directly into the vein, which may help to treat the condition. Endovenous laser ablation may be an option as well. In this procedure, a tiny laser fiber is inserted into the vein emitting pulses of light, which may collapse the vein.

Other treatment options for spider veins may include radiofrequency occlusion, surgical procedures and lasers or intense pulsed light. A health care professional may have further information regarding treatment options for spider veins.
