Varicose veins may develop if the patient has problematic valves in the veins and weak vein walls. If the veins do not function properly, blood may pool or collect, pressure may build and the vein may become weakened. The veins may also become twisted and enlarged.

Genetics may play a factor in developing varicose veins. Aging may play a role as well. Being overweight or pregnant and standing for a long period of time may place increased pressure on the legs, which may cause varicose veins in some patients. People with occupations that may require standing for prolonged periods of time may be at a greater risk of developing varicose veins.

There may be no symptoms associated with varicose veins for some individuals, although patients suffering from the condition may be concerned with the appearance of the veins. The dark blue, swollen and twisted appearance of the veins may be unsightly. Patients with varicose veins may notice that their legs feel weakened, achy, painful and heavy. These symptoms may become worse after sitting or standing for a long period of time.

Other symptoms of varicose veins may include changes in skin color, dry skin, thinned skin, inflammation of the skin, open sores and bleeding after a minor injury. Blood clot and inflammation may develop in some patients as well. Although in some cases varicose veins indicate a blockage in a deeper vein, having varicose veins may not always indicate a more serious health condition. A physician may need only to examine the legs and feet to diagnose the condition, although further tests may be given to determine if surgery or other treatments may be needed.

Wearing compression stockings if symptoms are painful may help to alleviate discomfort. Other possible treatments may include sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation or surgery. A health care professional may be helpful in determining which vascular treatment will work best for the individual.
