Wrinkles Information

Other possible causes of wrinkles may include smoking, having a fair complexion or skin type and hereditary factors. People who spend a lot of time outdoors or whose occupation requires them to be outdoors may be more prone to developing wrinkles. Wrinkles may be described as either fine surface lines or deep furrows. Treatment may depend on the type of wrinkles the patient has.

Smoking may be a key factor in the development of wrinkles in some cases. By smoking, people may be decreasing the amount of oxygen available to facial skin. This may result in premature wrinkles in some individuals. The physical act of puffing on a cigarette may require certain repetitive facial movements, which may lead to even more wrinkles in some areas of the face (around the lips).

Many treatments are available to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. These treatments may be medically based or cosmetic dermatology/surgery procedures. Vitamin A may be helpful in reducing wrinkles in many patients. Alpha-hydroxy acids (also called fruit acids) may provide subtle improvement in wrinkles. Antioxidant creams may also be effective. Ordinary moisturizers may temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Chemical peels may be helpful in reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Microdermabrasion and dermabrasion may also be effective, as these procedures smooth the skin and cause new skin cells to form. Laser resurfacing and fractional resurfacing may also be effective means to reducing wrinkles.

Other possible treatments may include heat and radiofrequency, non-ablative laser resurfacing, plastic surgery, Botox and dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane to name a few. A health care professional may be helpful in discussing the best treatments for each individual patient.
